Write down some thoughts about your current floor plan. What’s working? What isn’t? How do you and the people you live with use the space? Does the current floor plan help or hinder how you live? Does it work when people visit? Do you work from home and does it accommodate this? Will this layout be functional in five years’ time? What about 10 years’ time?
Okay, now that you’re clear about your current circumstances, write down some thoughts about your dream layout. Your best ideas will be based on a mix of inspo, practicality and working with the space you have and what you want to achieve. My mum once told me I could wish to have it all but reality would bite, and she’s right. Compromises are an inevitable part of every reno. Be realistic; don’t dream of a sprawling single-level house when you’re in a two-storey home on a tiny block.
